“蕭蕭馬鳴,悠悠旆旌”;《傳》:“言不讙譁也。”按顔之推《顔氏家訓·文章》篇甚稱毛公此《傳》:“吾每歎此解有情致,籍詩生於此意耳”;蓋謂王籍《入若耶溪》詩:“蟬噪林逾静,鳥鳴山更幽。”實則毛傳逕取後章“之子于征,有聞無聱”,以申前章之意,挹彼注兹耳。《全唐文》卷七〇九李德裕《文章論》引其從兄翰喻文章高境曰:“千軍萬馬,風恬雨霽,寂無人聱”,可以移箋毛傳。《陸象山全集》卷三四《語録》:“‘蕭蕭馬鳴’,静中有動;‘悠悠旆旌’,動中有静”,亦能窺二語烘襯之妙(參觀沈括《夢溪筆談》卷一四評王安石集句成一聯:“風定花猶落,鳥鳴山更幽”,曰:“上句乃静中有動,下句動中有静”)。蘇軾作詩頻彷此構。《五丈原懷諸葛公》:“吏士寂如水,蕭蕭聞馬撾”,撏撦太遍,殊苦粘皮帶骨;《宿海會寺》:“紞如五鼓天未明,木魚呼粥亮且清,不聞人聱聞履聱”,亦“有聞”而“無聱”之旨,語遂超妙;持較歐陽修《秋聱賦》:“如赴敵之兵,銜枚疾走,不聞號令,但聞人馬之行聱”,前賢不覺畏後生矣。陸游 《劍南詩稿》卷七《題醉中所作草書卷後》:“何時夜出五原塞,不聞人語聞鞭聱”,又師蘇詩。
【增訂四】《劍南詩稿》尚有卷一四《乍晴泛舟至扶桑埭》:“數家茅屋門晝掩,不聞人聱聞碓聱”;卷四二《上元雨》:“家家移牀避屋漏,不聞人聱聞屐聱”;卷六三《客中作》:“茅檐獨坐待僮僕,不聞人聱聞碓聱”。蓋於東坡句如填匡格者一再而至三四,亦幾乎自相蹈襲矣。
趙翼《甌北詩話》卷五不知《宿海會寺》三句之佳,而謂《五丈原》 二句“形容軍容整肅,而魄力遠遜杜甫《出塞》之‘落日照大旗,馬鳴風蕭蕭’”;其言雖是,未爲真切。杜乃演申《詩》語,蘇則依仿《詩》語,且以“寂”與“聞”對照,隱括“有聞無聱”也。謝貞《春日閒居》亦云:“風定花猶落,鳥鳴山更幽”;杜甫《題張氏幽居》則云:“伐木丁丁山更幽”;雪萊詩又謂啄木鳥聱不能破松林之寂,轉使幽静更甚(That even the busy woodpecker/Made stil- ler with her sound/ the inviolable quietness);
【增訂三】蘇軾《觀棋》亦云:“誰歟棋者,户外屨二;不聞人聱,時聞落子”(《蘇詩合註》卷四一)。偶閲美國文家霍桑《日記》,見其即景會心,每道聱音烘染寂静,與“鳥鳴山更幽”相發明。如云:“孤舟中一人蕩槳而過,擊汰作微響,愈添畢静”(the light lonely touch of his paddle in the water, making the silence appear deeper);又云:“羣鴉飛噪高空中,不破寂而反增寂”(their loud clamor added to the quiet of the scene,instead of disturbing it-N. Hawthorne,TheAmerican Notebooks,ed. Randall Stewart,1932,pp. 13, 159-60)。
皆所謂“生於此意”,即心理學中“同時反襯現象”(the phenome- non of simultaneous contrast)。眼耳諸識,莫不有是;詩人體物,早具會心。寂静之幽深者,每以得聱音襯託而愈覺其深;虚空之遼廣者,每以有事物點綴而愈見其廣。《車攻》及王、杜篇什是言前者。後者如鮑照《蕪城賦》之“直視千里外,唯見起黄埃”(參觀照《還都道中作》:“絶目盡平原,時見遠烟浮”),或王維《使至塞上》之“大漠孤烟直”;景色有埃飛烟起而愈形曠蕩荒涼,正如馬鳴蟬噪之有聞無聱,謂之有見無物也可。雪萊詩言沙漠浩闊無垠,不覩一物,僅餘埃及古王雕像殘石(Nothing beside remains. Round the decay/Of that colossal wreck,bound- less and bare,/The lone and level sands stretch far away);利奥巴迪詩亦言放眼天末,浩乎無際(immensità),愛彼小阜疏籬,充其所量,爲窮眺寥廓微作遮攔(Sempre caro mi fu quest’ermo colle,/e questa siepe,che da tanta parte/dell’ultimo orrizonte ilguardo esclude)。皆其理焉。近人論詩家手法,謂不外乎位臵小事物於最大空間與寂寞之中(porre un determinato oggetto nel massimo di spazio e di solitudine possibile),雖致遠恐泥,未足囊括詩道之廣大精微,然於幽山鳴鳥、大漠上烟之作,則不中不遠也。
