《蔡謨》(出《幽明録》)聞鄰左復魄聲,見新死老嫗欲升天,“聞一唤聲,輒回顧,三唤三顧,徘徊良久。”按卷三三 〇《王光本》(出《廣異記》)妻李氏卒,王慟哭,李見形曰: “聞君哀哭,慟之甚,某在泉途,倍益淒感,語曰:‘生人過悲,使幽壤不安’”;卷三三七《李澣》(出《廣異記》)死後見形於妻竇氏曰:“每在地下,聞君哭聲,輒令淒斷”;卷三三八《盧仲海》(出《通幽録》),從叔纘死,仲海行“招魂望反諸幽” 之“禮”,連呼纘名不息,纘得復活,自言方燕會,“聞唤聲哀厲,眩惻不安”,遂請放歸。英國一女詩人篇什中亦屢賦鬼魂見形於所歡,謂其哭聲徹地,淚滴及泉,長眠者不能自安(But why did your tears soak through the clay,/And why did your sobs wake me where I lay?etc.;I could rest if you would not moan/Hour after hour.../But there’s no sleeping while you sit weeping,etc.)。

【增訂四】格林童話一則言一小兒七歲夭,母哀之,日夜涕泣,一夕兒現形曰:“阿娘莫啼哭!娘眼淚流注,使兒裹身布淋漓不乾,兒不得安眠棺中”(Oh,mother,do stop crying or I shall never fall asleep in my coffin,for my shroud will not dry because of all your tears,which fall upon it)。母遂止聱收淚。明夕,兒復見,曰:“阿娘視兒!裹身布就燥,兒可棲息地下矣”(Look,mother,my shroud is nearly dry and I can rest in my grave.-“The Shroud”,The Complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales,Routledge and Kegan Raul,1975,pp. 502-3)。亦言泣淚滴九泉,吾國古小説祇道哭聱徹九幽耳。

《劉道錫》(出《幽明録》)不信鬼,從兄興伯能見鬼,指示東頭桑樹上有稚鬼,長必害人,夜道錫以戟刺鬼所在,翌日,興伯驚曰:“此鬼昨夜那得人刺之?殆死,都不能復動,死亦當不久。”按卷二九七《睦仁蒨》(出《冥報録》)問成景曰:“鬼有死乎?”曰:“然”,曰:“死入何道?”曰:“不知。如人知生而不知死”;卷三八四《許琛》(出《河東記》)問曰:“鴉鳴國空地何爲?”黄衫鬼使答:“人死則有鬼,鬼復有死,若無此地,何以處之?”是則鬼亦有死之説,由來已久,然在蒲松齡以前,似未有本斯意弄狡獪以出奇者。《聊齋志異》卷五《章阿端》寫阿端身死爲鬼,被鬼死爲聻者所祟,“鬼之畏聻,猶人之畏鬼也。”袁枚《新齊諧》卷三《城隍殺鬼不許爲聻》二隸請曰:“可准押往鴉鳴國爲聻否?”城隍曰:“此奴作鬼便害人,若作聻必又害鬼”;正兼用《許琛》之典及《章阿端》之意也。歧外有歧,夢中入夢,西方俗信無此譎詭。安世高譯《十八泥犁經》言:“能不死,而復生,無歲數”,“又不死,無歲數”,“痛不可言,已復不死”,毋慮十數次,未嘗道鬼亦能死。故魏禧《魏叔子文集》卷一《地獄論》上云:“刑莫慘於求死不得,求死不得,莫甚於死可復生,散可復聚,血肉糜爛可成體,以輾轉於刀鋸鼎鑊之中,百千萬年而無已極”;例如《廣記》卷一三二《李知禮》(出《冥報記》) “其肉剥而復生,生而復剥”,或董説《西遊補》第九回《秦檜百身難自贖》孫行者爲閻羅王,審訊“偷宋賊”,使上刀山、入油海、被碓磨、遭雷劈,施一刑畢,“吹轉真形”。此意則西方詞章常及之,每言鬼魂入無間地獄,受諸苦毒,求再死而不得(Che la seconda morte ciascun grida;De l’enfer il ne sort/Que l’éternelle soif de l’impossible mort;deathless death;O grausam Angst!stetssterben,sonder sterben!);甚且推而言仙女思凡不遂,傷心欲絶,願斷煩惱而求死不得(E per dar fine a tanto aspro martire,/Spesso si duol di non poter morire./Morir non puote alcuna fata mai),或天神失志憔悴,長生徒供長病,不克一死了事(bright- blanch’d by an immortal sickness which kills not;/It works a con- stant change which happy death/Can put an end to),或天神哀凡人之短命,而自恨不能亦死(I would give/All that I am to be as thou now art!/But I am chained to Time,and cannot thence de- part)。古羅馬詩人詛其仇曰:“願汝祈死而無死法”(Causaque non desit,desit tibi copia mortis:/optatam fugiat vita coac- to nocem);用意正同。

【增訂二】古希臘神話言天神許一人長生不死而未許其長壯不衰,英詩家嘗賦詩託爲其人老弊嗟怨之詞,與天齊壽而深恨長壽考之爲長受罪(Me only cruel immortality/Consumes- Tennyson:“Tithonus”)。正所謂“無死法”。

又按《廣記》卷三二三《張隆》(出《幽明録》)以大刀斫鬼處,即聞數十人哭甚悲曰:“死何由得棺!”旋又聞笑曰:“汝那能殺我也!”于《劉道錫》一則復添波折焉。
