應劭《風俗通義》:“熹平二年六月,雒陽民譌言:虎賁寺東壁中有黄人,形容鬚眉良是。觀者數萬,省内悉出。劭時爲郎,故往視之。何在其有人也!走漏汙處,膩赭流漉,壁有他剥數寸曲折耳。”按流俗寡昧,相驚伯有,見屋漏壁痕,詫歎妖異,故此條出《後漢書·五行志》註。然詩人畫士玩視壁痕而發興造藝者有之,或復師弟傳授以爲繪事法門焉。沈括《夢溪筆談》卷一七宋迪謂陳用之曰:“汝畫信工,但少天趣。汝先當求一敗牆,張絹素訖,倚之敗牆之上,朝夕觀之。觀之既久,隔素見敗牆之上,高下曲折,皆成山水之象,心存目想。”達文齊亦云,作畫時構思造境,可面對牆痕斑駁或石色錯雜,目注心營,則人物風景彷彿紛呈(Look at walls splashed with a number of stains,or stones of various mixed colours. If you have to invent some scene,you can see there resemblances to a number of various landscapes etc.)。二人之論意匠,巧合遥符,談者嘗捉置一處,或至疑西説乃東土之别傳云。夫玩壁上汙跡而想象形似,初不待畫師教誨,應劭此節,早著其例。唐顧況《苔蘚山歌》: “野人夜夢江南山,江南山深松桂閒。野人覺後長歎息,帖蘚黏苔作山色。閉門無事任盈虚,終日欹眠觀四如:一如白雲飛出壁,二如飛雨巖前滴,三如騰虎欲咆哮,四如嬾龍遭霹靂;嶮峭嵌空潭洞寒,小兒兩手扶欄干”;亦此事也。周亮工《尺牘新鈔》三選《結鄰集》卷八高阜《與蔚生弟論畫》:“予冬日坐明窗,窗格内紙僅三寸許,日光射蛛絲;影飄其上,度可二寸有餘,細塵微封其上。隔窗視之,其窈裊縱送、届身自如之狀,並塵封若有若無,一一肖似,真畫家所不能措手者。吴道子、李龍眠諸公想從此悟入”;更通之於畫,且似未嘗聞宋迪語者,蓋明末、清初沈括《筆談》固屬僻書也。許承堯《疑盦詩》丙卷《冰畫。北地嚴寒,明窗夜氣,沍作碎冰,曉起視之,天然成畫》:“倏忽虚無境,迷離山水情”,十字簡而能達。西方談者取達文齊之言充類一貫,至謂造藝師匠對世間事物,亦如達文齊之面敗壁(D’unefaçon plus générale, l’artiste est devant l’existence comme Léonard de Vinci devant le mur ruineux)。復有師其遺意,攝油垢充積之鍋底爲影(Paul Signac avait photographié un fond de casserole tout incrusté de suie),命人心存目想者;則幾如心理學中測驗法(The Rorschach test)矣。

【增訂三】達文齊面壁造境,年輩稍晚之畫師比埃羅·狄·谷西莫(Piero di Cosimo)亦然。《藝人列傳》本傳載病人哇吐牆上,留迹狼藉,渠過而止足,凝視意會,如覩羣馬酣鬬之狀或城市、山林奇詭之景;其觀雲時,擬想復爾(He stopped toexamine a wall where sick persons had used to spit,imagi- ning that he saw there combats of horses and the most fan- tastic cities and extraordinary landscapes ever beheld. He cherished the same fancies of clouds-Giorgio Vasari,op. cit.,II,177)。又與宋迪闇合神遇矣。望雲擬境,更與黄公望教人者同。《南村輟耕録》卷八載其《寫山水訣》有云:“登樓望空闊處氣韻,看雲彩即是山頭景物。李成、郭熙皆用此法,郭熙畫石如雲,古人云‘天開圖畫’者是也。”按黄庭堅《豫章文集》卷一五《王厚頌》第二首:“人得交游是風月,天開圖畫即江山。”然庭堅句言山水乃天然圖畫,公望斷章取義,言雲族有如“天”空上层“開”山水“畫”本,則當引顧愷之《神情詩》“夏雲多奇峰”耳。此訣雖乖庭堅詩旨,而自具心得,堪稱“創造性之誤解”,不妨“杜撰受用”(參觀 1660 又 1701 頁)。如《山谷内集》卷六《詠雪奉呈廣平公》:“連空春雪明如洗,忽憶江清水見沙”,任淵註:“沙以喻雪”;《簡齋集》卷一一“天缺西南江面清,纖雲不動小灘横”;《誠齋集》卷三二《明發栖隱寺》:“銀河到曉爛不收,皎如江練横天流,中流點綴金沙洲。……天光淡青日光白,道是銀漢也不得;雲師强狠趕不奔,堆作砂洲是碎雲”;皆“看”上空之舞雪停雲,“即是”下地之河沙洲渚,則正公望所解之“天開圖畫”矣。看雲彩而擬作山水,構想之通而無礙也;見雲氣而認爲蓬萊(參觀468 頁),致知之執而有蔽也。“看作”(seeing in)之與“見爲” (seeing as),毫釐千里焉。許承堯《冰畫》詩即《古今談概》卷三四所謂:“冰霜所結,有‘天畫’之稱”;張蔭桓《鐵畫樓詩續鈔》卷下《晨窗積凍戲爲短詠》亦已云:“人事研竟輸天工,……畫意直可超南宗。”

【增訂四】畫人“看雲彩是山頭”之事,始載於郭若虚《圖畫見聞志》卷四:“翟院深……少爲本郡伶官。一日有會,院深擊鼓忘其節奏。部長按舉其罪,太守面詰之。院深乃曰:‘院深雖賤品,天與之性,好畫山水。向擊鼓次,偶見雲聲奇峯,堪爲畫範;難明兩視,忽亂五聱。’太守嘉而釋之。”《宣和畫譜》卷一一記院深言,作:“忽見浮雲在空,宛若奇峯、絶壁,真可以爲畫範。”王闢之《澠水燕談録》卷七亦記其事而較略,院深答語作:“適樂作次,有孤雲横飛,淡佇可愛,意欲圖寫,凝思久之”,則非見“雲聲”如“峯”,而欲逕畫“雲飛”矣。《簡齊集》卷一四《晚步》:“停雲甚可愛,重疊如沙汀”,可與原引卷一一《雨晴》句相參。《中州集》卷一密國公璹《夏晚登樓》:“雲似碧山天似水,霽波平浸兩三峯。”德昆亞《懺悔録》有一節寫仰望晚雲成族,掩蓋不盡之太空出其隙,點點如島嶼之在湖中(The clouds passed slowly through several ar- rangements,and in the last of these I read the very scene which six months before I had read in a most exquisite po- em of Wordsworth’s,[“Ruth”]...It was a Canadian lake, “with all its fairy crowds/Of islands that together lie/As quietly as spots of sky/Among the evening clouds ”. - Confessions of an English Opium Eater,Everyman’s Lib.,p. 95),會心正復不遠。白居易《江樓晚眺,景物鮮奇,吟翫成篇》:“蜃散雲收破樓閣,虹殘水照斷橋梁”,又“天開圖畫” 之早者。古希臘人論想象,舉人觀天上浮雲輒作半人馬、鹿、羚羊、狼、馬諸獸形爲例,即近世心理學所謂“投射”(pro-jection)爾(But what about the things we see in the sky when the clouds are drifting the centaurs and stag,ante- lopes and wolves and horses?etc. -Philostratus,The Life of Apollonius of Tyana,II. xxii,Loeb,Vol. I,pp. 175 ff.; cf.
